So what is a PAC code? So many people get confused with whole number porting process, so we thought we would write this article to give a brief outlay of number porting and PAC codes.
What is a PAC code and what does it mean?
Well a PAC code stands for Porting Authorisation Code and is needed for the purpose of transferring your mobile phone number from one network to another.
How do I get a PAC code?
In order for you to obtain your PAC code, your mobile phone contract must be eligible. For example, if you signed an 18 month contract with T-Mobile , you will not be eligible for a PAC code until month 17 of your contract. Your PAC number is only valid for 30 days after you have requested it from your service provider. It must be submitted to the new network within that period.
You might get refused a PAC code for one of the following reasons:
- your number is disconnected – i.e. you must not cancel your existing contract before requesting a PAC number
- you have not yet fulfilled your obligations under your existing minimum term contract
How will I receive my PAC code?
Different service providers will issue your PAC number in different ways. T-Mobile, Vodafone and O2 normally send your PAC code through the post (3 working days). Orange sometimes Issue PAC codes over the phone, or via text. Please speak to your service provider to find out the exact delivery method.
What shall I do with my PAC Code?
Once you have received your PAC number, you will need to give this number to your new service provider. Be careful, some service providers, such as O2 and Vodafone require your PAC code at the point of connection. If you do not give them your PAC code at the point of connection, you may not be able to transfer your PAC number. T-Mobile on the other hand will allow you to transfer your number at any stage of you contract. Please contact your new network to find out the procedure.
Why do use PAC code and PAC number? What is the difference?
There is no difference; they both mean the same thing.
What does MNP mean?
MNP stands for Mobile Number Portability, and is the industry agreed process by which a customer can switch from one network operator to another and take their existing mobile number with them.
I’m on Pay As You Go, can I port my number onto contract?
Yes you can. This process is called migration. The procedure in this article is the same migrations as it is for normal number porting requests.
Can I port a number over from the same network?
No you cannot number port a number from the same network. If you wish keep a number and stay of your existing mobile network, you will need to go through the upgrade process.
How long will it take for my number to be transferred across?
It can take up to 14 days for your number to transfer across. Your new network will provide you with a temporary number until your number has been fully ported across.
You will not be able to keep any credit, if you are transferring from Pay As You Go to contract.
If you request a number port from your network and request a PAC code. Your existing network will take as 30 days notice to terminate your contract.
The issuing of a PAC number against a mobile number will revoke any previous disconnection request.
Service charges and any associated subscription charges will continue if no transfer request is received by your current network, even if you’ve previously given notice.
